At Georgian College, the office providing accessibility services to students is called the Accessibility Services. The Accessibility Services is the primary place to find out about all of your disability related needs.

 

Transition Program

Georgian College offers a transition program to assist with the transition into post-secondary, develop academic and learning strategy skills, experience campus life, and earn a college credit.

Support Services Available

Health Services

Georgian College's Health Services on the Barrie Campus offers health care through the services of an on-campus nurse practitioner clinic and an off-campus wellness centre.

 

Counselling Services

Georgian College’s Counselling centre offers service for students who are experiencing stressful events in their lives.

 

Academic Support

Georgian College's Academic Success Centres offer academic support to students. Writing Centre is for students who would like to improve or enhance their writing skills and is available in Barrie, Orillia, Owen Sound, and Orangeville. Peer tutoring is available on campus in Barrie, Orillia, Owen Sound, Midland, and Orangeville.

 

Library Services

The Library Commons & Academic Success Centre at Georgian College's Barrie, Midland, Orillia and Owen Sound campuses offer various resources for students including databases, journals, e-books, and e-videos. The library also provides services for students such as learning strategists, a math centre, a writing centre, material reservations, and online access. The library offers accessible services for students with disabilities.

 

Academic Advising

Georgian College provides student advising to support first-year students as they transition to college life, providing study skills support and making referrals to other resources students may need.

Financial Aid

Georgian’s Financial Aid office offers a variety of services to help students meet their financial responsibilities, including OSAP and related programs, bursaries and emergency funding. They also act as liaisons with the National Student Loan Service Centre and the Student Financial Assistance Branch.

Residence and Housing

On-Campus Housing

Georgian College houses students in traditional style accommodations at the Barrie campus, suite style accommodations at the Orillia campus, and townhouse style accommodations at the Owen-Sound campus. Residence rooms are allocated using a lottery system, with students living further than 50 kilometres away being given first preference in the lottery. If students are not initially selected, they will be placed on a waiting list. Traditional style accommodations include single, double and triple suites with private bedrooms, a shared washroom and a shared kitchen. Suite units include 4 private bedrooms, 2 washrooms, a common kitchen, laundry facilities and common living space.  Virtual tours of suites are available. Townhouse units are 3-storeys and include 4 private bedrooms, shared washrooms, laundry facilities, a common kitchen and common living space. Virtual tours are available. Building amenities for traditional and suite style residences include:

  • Common lounges
  • Common study areas
  • Access to a 24/7 front desk
  • Maintenance
  • Laundry facilities (included in townhouse style)

Residence rooms come furnished and include internet access and local telephone service. Residence rates vary depending on suite style and do not include a meal plan. Meal plans may be purchased separately if desired.

Accessible and barrier-free rooms are available for students requiring special accommodations. To inquire about special accommodations while in residence, students must contact the Housing office on campus.

 

Off-Campus Housing

Georgian College offers an accommodation listing service for off-campus housing, where landlords can advertise rental properties available.

Barrie Transit

Barrie Transit is comprised of buses. Full-time students at Georgian College are eligible to purchase a discounted student semester pass. Schedules and maps are offered for every bus route that Barrie Transit provides.

Accessibility

Barrie Transit provides accessible buses with features such as low floors, kneeling features, ramps, next stop announcement systems, priority and courtesy seating.

The Barrie Accessible Community Transportation Service (BACTS) offers accessible door-to-door transit services for persons with mobility difficulties. Registered clients of BACTS can use the services for appointments, school, shopping, and social outings. Persons who require an attendant to travel with, are able to have the attendant travel free of charge. More information is available on the Barrie Transit webpage.  

 

Orillia Transit

Orillia Transit is comprised of buses. Regular price fares are available for students. Route maps and schedules are available for Orillia Transit buses.

Accessibility

The Orillia Wheelchair Limousine Service (O.W.L.S.) is a door-to-door service for persons who require wheelchair accessible transit services. If a person requires a personal care or assistant to ride with them, they are asked to arrange their own support person, who will travel free of charge. Owen Sound Transit

Owen Sound Transit is comprised of buses. Full-time students at Georgian College are eligible to purchase discounted passesBus schedules and route maps are provided for every transit route that Owen Sound Transit offers.

Accessibility

The Specialized Transit is a door-to-door service for persons with mobility limitations who due to their disability are unable to use the conventional transit. Persons who require an attendant to travel with, are asked to arrange their own attendant, at their own cost.
