Laurentian University is a bilingual university with locations in Sudbury and Barrie, in Ontario. Laurentian University provides educational opportunities to 9 700 full-time and part-time students. Laurentian University has 6 faculties and schools, each with their own academic programs and departments:

Accessibility Services

At Laurentian University's Sudbury campus, the centre providing accessibility services to students is called Accessibility Services. Accessibility Services is the primary place to find out about all of your disability related needs.  Students at the Barrie campus receive accessibility services through Georgian College. 

Transition Program

Laurentian University offers a transition program for students at the Sudbury campus with learning disabilities called Laurentian Initiative for Transition (LIFT).

Documentation Required

Accessibility Services request that students bring any and all documentation that is related to their disability, for example, a psycho educational assessment or a letter from a medical professional containing any education related recommendations.

Support Services Available

Health Services

Health Services at Laurentian University offers health and medical care provided by nurse practitioners and part-time physicians on the Sudbury campus.

Counselling Services

Laurentian University's Counselling & Support Program offers counselling for any student who may be experiencing stressful events in their life.

Academic Support

The Centre for Academic Excellence (CAE), located on both of Laurentian's campuses offer a range of support to students, including peer tutoring, writing assistance, workshops and culturally-centered academic support network for First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students. 

Library Services

The J.N Desmarais Library & Archive at Laurentian University's Sudbury campus offers various resources for students including books, journal articles, and e-books. Library services include research help and general information, interlibrary loans, and research skills tutorials. The J.N Desmarais Library & Archive works in conjunction with Accessibility Services to provide students with disabilities accessible materials, technologies, and facilities. Students at the Barrie Campus are able to access the library services at Georgian College.

Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards

Laurentian University’s Fees & Financing office offers a range of financial assistance which consists of merit-based scholarships, need-based bursaries, and awards based on academic achievement. Residence and Housing

On-Campus Housing

Laurentian University’s Residence Office offers 8 different residences in traditional and apartment style accommodations on the Sudbury campus. First year students with a 75% average or above are guaranteed a bed in residence. Traditional style residence features single or double rooms with communal washrooms. Apartment style includes multiple bedrooms, a shared washroom, a shared kitchen and shared living room. All buildings include the following amenities:

  • Common lounges
  • Common study rooms
  • Common kitchens
  • Computer labs
  • Games rooms
  • Access to a 24/7 front desk
  • Maintenance
  • Laundry facilities

All rooms in residence come furnished and include internet, local telephone service, and cable television. Residence rates vary depending on residence choice and room style. Mandatory meal plans are an additional cost and work on a declining balance system with a set number of meals for the year.

Laurentian University offers several barrier-free rooms for students requiring special accommodations. Students can apply for barrier-free rooms by contacting the Residence Office on campus.

Off-Campus Housing

Sudbury Transit

Greater Sudbury Transit is comprised of buses. Full-time students at Laurentian College receive a bus pass included in their tuition. Schedules are provided for every transit route that Greater Sudbury Transit provides.

Accessibility
Greater Sudbury Transit offers accessible features on their conventional transit such as low floors, wheel chair ramps, priority seating, and automated stop systems.

Handi-Transit provides door-to-door transit services for person with disabilities, who are unable to the conventional transit. Users who require a support person are able to apply for a support person pass, which allows Support Persons to travel free of charge. More information about Handi-Transit and the eligibility guidelines and application is available on their website.

Barrie Transit

Barrie Transit is comprised of buses. Full-time students at Laurentian College are eligible to purchase a discounted student semester pass. Schedules and maps are offered for every bus route that Barrie Transit provides.

Accessibility
Barrie Transit provides accessible buses with features such as low floors, kneeling features, ramps, next stop announcement systems, priority and courtesy seating.

The Specialized Transit program offers accessible door-to-door transit services for persons with mobility difficulties. Registered clients of the Specialized Transit Program can use the services for appointments, school, shopping, and social outings. Persons who require an attendant to travel with, are able to have the attendant travel free of charge. Persons who would like to register have to complete the an application form.
