Transition Programs

SHIFT is Toronto Metropolitan University’s summer program for students with disabilities who are heading into their first year of post-secondary studies. This one-day program provides information about registering with Academic Accommodation Support, as well as an opportunity to talk to current students with disabilities at Toronto Metropolitan University. We also offer an introduction to:

  • Assistive Technology
  • Learning strategies and self-advocacy 
  • The online and in-person university learning environment (including lectures)
  • Campus resources for student wellbeing and academic success

Health Services

The Medical Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University offers a range of services from their team of health care practitioners, including appointments with a family physician.

Counselling Services

The Centre for Student Development and Counselling offers confidential counselling services in a professional and friendly environment for any student who is seeking support and guidance in navigating emotions, mental health challenges, well-being, and/or stressful life events.

Academic Support

Student Learning Support at Toronto Metropolitan University offers several resources for students, including math, writing and study skills support. The Math Centre supports Toronto Metropolitan students in all programs with their math skills and math-related courses. Writing and Language Support at Toronto Metropolitan University helps students to become better writers by engaging them in meaningful conversations about their writing. Study Skills and Transition Support offers workshops, individual and group help as well as peer tutoring to students to help them be successful. Other support areas include Graduate Student Support and the Test Centre.

Academic Advising

Toronto Metropolitan University has program advisors in each faculty and school to assist students with any questions or concerns related to their academic program of study.

Library Services

The Toronto Metropolitan University Library offers virtual services, programs, and various resources for students such as databases, journals, e-books, streaming services, data, and e-videos etc. The library also provides audio-visual services, workshops, instruction sessions, digital course readings, laptop and wifi loans, borrowing services, borrowing from another library, instructional services, and research help. The Ronald D. Besse Information & Learning Commons, located in the Library, provides access to a wide variety of resources with advanced technology and provides assistance to students to help them integrate technology into their academic pursuit.

The Navigate TMU Program is intended to help students feel more confident and prepared to navigate the university experience. Nativate TMU resources include navigating your identity, your wellbeing, the community, your learning, systems and structures, and resources available.

Financial Aid

Admission Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards

Toronto Metropolitan University’s Scholarships and Awards office offers a range of financial assistance which consists of merit-based scholarships, need-based bursaries and awards based on academic achievement. Residence and Housing

On-Campus Housing

Toronto Metropolitan University offers traditional and apartment-style rooms across three residence buildings. Residence is not guaranteed for first-year students, and preference is given to students transitioning directly from high school and those who live furthest away from the university. All residence buildings at Toronto Metropolitan University are mixed gender and feature the following amenities: 

  • Common lounges
  • Common study rooms
  • Access to a front desk
  • Maintenance
  • Laundry facilities

All residences come furnished and include Internet access. Residence costs vary according to building and room selection. Meal plans are mandatory. 

Accessibility Accommodations

Students who require special accommodations in residence are asked to complete the Residence Accessibility Accommodation Request form alongside their residence application. 

Off-Campus Housing

TMU’s Off Campus Housing Office is a resource for students when they are looking for a place to live off campus. The office provides information for students to facilitate their own housing searches.

Toronto Transit

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is comprised of subways, buses, and streetcars. A discounted Post-Secondary Student Monthly Metro Pass is available for purchase for full-time students at Centennial College. Schedules and maps are provided for each of the TTC transit options.

Accessibility

The TTC offers accessible services on both their buses and subways. Accessible services on buses include kneeling features, ramps, lifts, automated next stop announcements, wheel chair and scooter positions, and priority seating. The subways provide accessible services such as wheel chair positions and priority seating. There are elevators at 67 out of the 70 TTC subway stations, while the remaining are waiting to be upgraded. 

The TTC offers the Support Person Assistance Card which allows users of the transit system who require a support person to have this person travel with them at no additional cost. Persons interested in the support program must fill out the application form.

Wheel-Trans is a service that provides door-to-door accessible transit service for persons with physical disabilities. The TTC has established eligibility guidelines for the use of Wheel-Trans. Persons seeking to use Wheel-Trans must participate in an in-person interview.
